Reid State Park: 2007
It's hard to beat
Reid State Park on a warm winter day. Views are spectacular and sea ducks
are often close to shore. A dozen Penobscot Valley Chapter birders got lucky
on March 4th. Moderate westerly breezes were blocked by the sand dunes,
ensuring pleasant conditions on the beach, but pushing the birds a little
farther offshore than usual. Nonetheless, counts included all three scoter
species, Common and Red-throated Loons, Horned and Red-necked Grebes, plus
plenty of Common Eiders, Long-tailed Ducks, and Buffleheads. Distant,
fleeting looks at Razorbills were a highlight for those who got to see them.
On the way home, a stop at the boat landing in Bath showcased many dozens of
Common Mergansers and a handful of Common Goldeneyes. The day also totaled
seven Bald Eagles.
