On a weekend sandwiched between Hurricanes Bonnie and Charlie, 16 intrepid nature-lovers probed the cliffs, beaches, and marshes of Grand Manan island through rain, fog, and brilliant sun. An abnormal number of pilot, humpback, and finback whales were seen from land on this trip and an uncountable number of white-sided dolphins and harbor porpoises turned up on the ferry ride. An ocean smooth as glass provided thousands of greater shearwaters, a few sooty shearwaters, close-by flocks of razorbills and common murres, Wilson's storm-petrels, perhaps a couple Leach's storm-petrels, and at least one northern gannet.
