Acadia National Park Field Trip On Saturday, January 28th, Sandi and Bob Duchesne led a winter field trip through Acadia National Park in truly splendid weather. The group arrived at the Bar Harbor pier at 10am and were treated to very close looks at Common Eiders, Long-tailed Ducks, Black Guillemots, and Common Loons. Next, a flock of several hundred Common Eiders greeted the group at the Bar Harbor sand bar on Bridge Street. on January 28th. Highlights included four Bald Eagle sightings, close observations of Purple Sandpipers, and many of the usual sea ducks: Common Loon, Common Goldeneye, Red-breasted Merganser, Long-tailed Duck, Horned Grebe, Red-necked Grebe, Bufflehead, Black Guillemot, and Black Scoter. At Thunderhole, a couple dozen Purple Sandpipers kept scurrying in and out of view. Otter Cove produced the ever-reliable Red-breasted Mergansers and Horned Grebes. Although Sommes Sound was unusually quiet, Seawall in Manset was quite productive. There were many Black Scoters and a single, young Great Cormorant.
